Pharoah Headpiece ChildEver thought about a kids King Tut costume for Halloween? A great costume for a boy on halloween could be an Egyptian ruler such as King Tut.

A similar costume could be made for a girl too with just a few minor alterations. All you need is some fabric, a pair of old sandals, some wide gold lacing, gold spray paint, and a plastic vine with flowers.

Here’s how I made a kids King Tut costume for my own kids for Halloween. Start with something in a deep rich red, purple, or dark blue. This can be a sheet, an old curtain, new material, or even a repurposed dress. You need a lot as it will be a long robe. If you’re using fabric, double the fabric, marking the center of the fold. Cut a small hole, just large enough to go over the head of the person wearing it.

You can hem this hole by sewing or gluing, or just leave the raw edge. It’s only one night, after all. You could also make a smaller hole, and then a small slit down the front. Then sew or glue the sides together, leaving about six inches at the top for the arms to go through. If you wanted, a terrycloth robe would save you some work for your kids King Tut costume, but it needs to close in the front in some way. This could be pinned.

Pharoah Child CostumeNext you need a white sheet or piece of fabric, somewhat smaller and shorter than the colored piece. Do the same steps with the white, but do make the cut down the front. This cut should go all the way down so it is open and the colored robe shows through. Apply glue and gold glitter in a fancy pattern down the front of each robe on this section of your homemade kids King Tut costume.

Use wide gold lace or rickrack to trim the edges and hems. Get lots of this, as it is also used for the legs. I used 5/8″ wide flat lacing. I used the same lacing to make a belt for the colored robe too. Use more than you need and tie it, leaving the ends to hang loose for a more authentic look.

Spray paint your kids King Tut costume sandals and the plastic vine, allowing plenty of time to dry. For the feet take two or three yards of the lacing and thread it through a sandal and then center. Do this loosely before you cut it to make sure there is enough on each side. A matching costume can be made for a girl by simply using narrower lace and a smaller vine.

Attach it with glue or tie it securely. After the shoe is on the foot, use the two sides of the lacing to criss-cross around the ankle and then on up the leg, going all the way to the base of the knee, leaving a couple inches between each cross. Tie securely, and repeat for the other foot.

King Tut Half MaskYour kids King Tut costumes colored robe should be long enough to cover this so go ahead and tie in a bow so they’re easy to remove. You could also center the lace under the arch of the foot and not attach it to the sandal but that may cause slight discomfort or tickling!

Measure the intended child’s head, and then cut the vine an inch longer. Use the extra inch to hold the two ends together and tie them securely in a circle. This is the crown. You could also make a fancier crown with cardboard and spray paint it gold. Glue on some jewels if you like.

Add some large gold chains or chunky jewelry to your childs costume and your kids King Tut costume is ready to rule! All the neighborhood kids will be soooo jealous this Halloween you can bet!
